(forgive me if during this post I insult anyone with my ignorance on religion)

I just witnessed something that makes me very angry and very sad. I was walking out of the Student Union today before I had to go work on some lighting stuff and there was this religious man outside preaching.

He was talking about marriage, I’m not entirely sure if it was equal marriage between everyone gay or straight but it tuned into incest is not okay and pedofilia is not okay. There was this other man there of the Islamic religion nicely debating with him but it then started to turn very ugly. The preacher man said something along the lines of Muhammad being a pedofile for marrying a 9 year-old and offended the other man greatly. He not only offended that man but me as well.

I’m sorry sir but there is a fine line between disagreeing with another religion and disrespecting another religion.

Sir, you need to keep in mind that Muhammad lived in another part of the world at another point in time. Marrying a 9 year-old may have not been so “pedofile-ish” as it is seen today in your world. Back then families would have to sell their daughters to keep their family alive. There were arranged marriages, women sadly were like cattle, they had little or no rights and little or no power and so it was okay for this to happen. This happened all over the world for hundreds of years. Muhammad’s 9 year-old wife was a symbol of pureness and virginity which in, I’m assuming here, is sacred in almost or even all religions. And to be married to the Profit makes it that more precious to the girl’s family and to his followers.

Also sir, you have a right for public speech and to say really anything you want but you need to keep in mind that if you are trying to convert people to your ways insulting the person and they religion they hold is not going to win them into your favor. I admire the missionaries that come door to door (although they can get annoying but that’s not really my point here) they peacefully let you know about their faith and don’t try to insult your’s. They just want to prove to you that their’s is better. That goes for every religion though. Everyone thinks their’s is the best until proven with a better one.

That book you have in your hand sir, I’m pretty sure you may call it a bible, is a reference book written by many many people telling many many different stories. Each story with a different meaning and each meaning applied in different situations. I know that there are times in which (if read out of context) the bible contradicts itself. So whatever line you read from your book to prove that Muslim man wrong, you need to 1. put that line in context and 2. back it up with more sources (preferably a line from his holy book that means the same as your line from your holy book).

A professor of mine once said “Jesus was a nice guy. To see you people fighting over religion would make him cry.” (She was referencing the Crusades but I feel that this can be relevant here.)

That be the end of my little rant. I open this up to anyone who wishes to clarify any information I do not know the real answer to. I did not do any research before writing this so any facts I put here, I pulled out of my own general knowledge on this. Also comment what you like, I’d like to know your thoughts, just make sure you keep it civil and no insluts. :)
